The Harlem Shake

This video titled "Harlem Reacts to the Harlem Shake" shows how people feel disrespected when people mock their culture in an ignorant way. Although they don't know what they are doing basically they are stealing from another culture. Culture appropreation means use of another culture but not in a good way. In this video they show people from harlem reacting to the outsiders who were trying to do the Harlem Shake. As they were watching the video they were offended because the outsiders disrespected the people in Harlem. They also are saying it is making them look bad and the people from Harlem also talked about the humping and how it is garbage. The origonal Harlem shake has art and meaning. Nobody had anything posotive to say, Lastly the videos made harlem look trashy. These people from Harlem feel disrespected because the outsiders don't come from Harlem. They also feel it's a mockery because the actual Harlem Shake has a sense of rhythm and others versions don't. They feel the outsiders are disrespecting Harlem "swag" which is a trend and style. They feel its another trend america can make money on. If you want to see what the real harlem shake looks like check out these videos "how to do the Harlem shake", and "the real harlem shake"

  1. It's funny seeing how people from Harlem react to the "Harlem Shake". I understand why they would get offended because the videos and the(new)dance took something that was theirs and completely turned it upside down. Harlem Shake by Baauer (who is an excellent producer by the way)never once claimed that the dance in the viral videos was the original Harlem Shake. He actually had created the song about a year ago, and the rest is history, but i do agree with you when you say that it's a trend, because sadly, that's all it really was.

  2. Hello. I personally agree with in this blog the “The Harlem Shake” seems to be the new dance and everyone seems to be doing it these days not knowing where the dance originated from or who came up with the dance taking the original dance and disrespecting the cultural and not giving them some type of credit. They even came up with their own song so it won’t look like the original which it’s not but the name itself makes everyone see it as disrespect.

  3. Hi, I completely agree with this article and video because people from all over the US copying "The Harlem Shake" is disrespectful to the actual citizens from Harlem. I agree with the idea that "These people from Harlem feel disrespected because the outsiders don't come from Harlem." because its not right to make fun of others and their culture. The blog made me think about watching the videos others have made about "The Harlem Shake" and how they are completely immature and childish. The entry made me think about the feelings of the people of Harlem. Consider thinking about talking about how the others changed up the song and dance to make it a complete joke. Do you think there is any way of stopping others from doing "The Harlem Shake"? I think you should add that to the article and make it a focus on the discussion above.
